Local SEO for small businesses, in plain English

How local businesses show up on Google Maps and search, and what actually moves the needle.

If you run a business that serves a specific area, local SEO is one of the highest-leverage things you can invest in. When someone nearby searches for what you do, you want to be the name they see. Here's how that actually works, without the jargon.

What 'local SEO' actually means

It's the work of showing up when people search with local intent: 'dry cleaner near me,' 'dumpster rental in Clinton,' that sort of thing. Google shows those searches differently, with a map and a short list of local businesses at the top. Landing in that list is the whole game.

The things that matter most

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile, with the right category, hours, and photos
  • Consistent name, address, and phone number everywhere you appear online
  • Real reviews, and actually responding to them
  • A fast, mobile-friendly site that answers what people ask
  • Content and page structure built around your services and area
  • Clean structured data, so search engines understand exactly who and where you are

The map pack is the prize

That little map with three businesses under it, the 'map pack,' gets a huge share of local clicks, often before anyone scrolls. Getting in and staying in is where most of the value is, and it rewards the steady fundamentals above rather than any one trick.

What about AI search?

More people are asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI for recommendations now. The good news is it leans on the same foundations: clear information, real content, and good structured data. Do local SEO well and you're already most of the way to showing up in AI answers too.

A real example

For My Best Cleaners, focusing on these fundamentals meant ranking #1 for local terms in Clinton, MD and growing organic traffic around 29% month over month. No tricks, just the durable work that keeps paying off.
